"Crow" is the assumed name of a kenku bard. Crow is a name given to them by others; Crow's "real" name is not known as the kenku race does not have a native language.

Unlike many adult kenku, Crow is not experienced with the spoken word and often employs eccentric and confusing phrases and metaphors when trying to communicate. Conversely, Crow is exceptionally fluent at written language, able to eloquently read and write in Common, Auran, Draconic and Elvish.

This fluency has led Crow to not employ an instrument as their creative focus, but ink and quill instead, casting spells by writing and drawing them onto paper, the air or ground instead of utilising an instrumental focus.

History

Crow was separated from their flock at a relatively early age, and has not consorted with other kenku for some time.

Crow formerly worked as a scribe at the Monastery of Deneir, using their prowess at forgery and mimicry to accurately reproduce religious and historical texts in several languages. They largely worked in a solitary fashion, and was not often in social situations with others, leading to Crow's limited and uneven vocabulary.

Upon receiving a letter from a former friend/colleague calling for help, Crow left the monastery seeking to find them, landing as an adventurer for hire in the town of Arcania.

Personality

Crow generally comes across as an eccentric and socially reserved individual. Aware that their manner of speaking is typically confusing to others, Crow has a tendency to not speak unless spoken to and will only engage in social situations if pushed to do so. Crow is very self-conscious that kenku in general have a reputation for thievery and criminal activity, and is careful to try and not appear as a thief or scoundrel even by accident.

Crow greatly enjoys heights (the closest thing they have to flight) and the hoarding of shiny objects. This desire to hoard causes Crow to be somewhat of a spendthrift, and to pursue the acquisition of money, jewels and other "shinies" that they encounter, so long as doing so doesn't obviously break the law.

Manner of speech

Crow's speaking patterns are generally quite fragmented, and employ confusing, unexpected, anachronistic, and occasionally downright incorrect phrases when referring to things. This includes common phrases, as well as the vocal components of spells.

Examples of Crow's speech
Phrase or sound Meaning
Yee. Yes.
Naw. No.
You're a peach. Thank you.
Mis disculpas, amigo. I'm sorry, friend.
Cheery pop! Goodbye.
Gurt lush, that is. That's very good.
What a savings! That's cheap!
Ferret. Any small, furry mammal.
The jangling of coins in a bag. Money.
Glugging of wine being poured from a bottle. Bottled liquid.
Wood cracking and splintering. Breaking or broken.

With spellcasting, Crow tends to employ more complete phrases, however these still tend to range from the anachronistic to the nonsensical.

When trying to communicate information that Crow isn't sure how to explain, they will usually fall back to trying to express it with hand signs (like charades or sign language) or pulling out a book and quill in order to write what they mean.

Appearance

Crow resembles an anthropomorphic corvid, with a large beak and glossy black feathers covering their body, with the exception of clawed hands and feet, with dark grey skin on the forearms and legs. They have blue eyes.

Crow wears fairly simple but brightly coloured shirt and shorts, with a dark grey vest, and a blue and red "floppy" beret.

Crow is left-handed.

Abilities

Crow is skilled at a wide range of skills, with particular proficiency at forgery, perception and deception. As a kenku, Crow is able to mimic sounds with complete precision and with no degradation of quality over time.

Crow can perform limited magic.

Crow can fluently read and write Common, Auran, Draconic and Elvish. Their writing style is considered to be quite eloquent. Due to their history at the monastery, they are generally well read and knowledgeable about historical and religious texts.
